The First Charleston Crab Feed was held in 1985 by the Charleston Merchants. The community joined in to help; Charleston Fish Wives, Charleston Fire Department, Coos Head Garden Club, and local citizens.
In 1984 the Oregon Dept. of Transportation was making plans to build a new bridge over the South Slough and bypass Charleston! This bridge plan to bypass Charleston would have devastated businesses, State and County Parks, fishermen, and tourists alike. Thus in 1984, the Charleston Merchants Association was formed to contest the bridge bypass and the Charleston Crab Feed started in order to fund their efforts.
The Charleston Crab Feed kept going and a traveling Charleston Visitor Center was built. Through the years the Crab Feed proceeds have funded the All-Volunteer Charleston Visitor Center along with Merchant Association dues.
People from all over look forward to coming to the Charleston Crab Feed which brings tourists to our area in the off-season and promotes the important commercial crab industry in Oregon.
The Annual Crab Feed is held on the 2nd Saturday in February each year at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Charleston.
